ARTIST STATEMENT
I am inspired to paint my landscapes and abstract paintings for
the pure joy of interpreting inspirational places; to try to capture
the essence of an environment on a particular day. I want to share
the overwhelming sense of appreciation I get for the complex beauty
of nature. I then decide whether the painting will be a landscape
or an abstract.
When I decide on painting a particular landscape, I have an image
of it in my mind’s eye which acts as a focus for what I want
to show. However many times unexpected directions and new ideas
take hold and the paintings take shape in a different and better
way.
I use a method of subtraction when painting which involves painting
layers and then wiping away some layers to expose a layer underneath.
This method creates depth and complexity in the surface. I do not
try to paint what I see; but rather I interpret the feelings the
landscapes evoke in me.
I was born in New York City and have been painting since childhood.
I have a M.S. degree in counseling from City University of New York
and a B.S. degree in liberal arts. Over the years, I have taken
many art classes and workshops. My work is shown in local galleries
and other venues in the San Francisco Bay Area.
